(In)Visible Cities - I’m the filter
Invisible Cities is a book that explores imagination and the imaginable through the descriptions of cities by an explorer, Marco Polo. The book is framed as a conversation between the elderly and busy emperor Kublai Khan, who constantly has merchants coming to describe the state of his expanding and vast empire, and Polo. The majority of the book consists of brief prose poems describing 55 fictitious cities that are narrated by Polo, many of which can be read as parables or meditations on culture, language, time, memory, death, or the general nature of human experience.
This project is about the visualization of cities described in the [Invisible Cities] of Italo Calvino, turning the invisible cities to visible ones using clay as the medium. The projection of pixel shorting video reflects the romance of time changing and passing in these cities in the author's writing. The video is accompanied by readings of the descriptions of each city in the book, and they are overlaid to show a state of knowledge and unknowability of the cities in the book.
